Web Based POS System

by Geoffrey Sy

Alliance Software, Inc. (http://www.alliance.com.ph) has recently developed a state of the art Point of Sales (POS) solution based on software as a service (SaaS) architecture. This is also known as cloud computing.

The product is called Alliance WebPOS (http://www.alliancepos.net).  Let's take a quick look at its unique features.

Native and Cloud Computing
First, it combines the strength of native application and that of cloud computing.

As a native application, a small program will be downloaded from the site and installed natively in your computer.  This takes advantage of rich user interface such as access to short cut keys and is extremely fast (with no more browser loading time).    There is also no security restrictions associated with browser so it integrates well with your hardware such as printer, customer display and drawer.

As a cloud computing platform, all data are stored in a host server that is accessible through internet browser. This gives you the flexibility to monitor your business on the go.   Busy businessmen can now take that needed vacation and still be on top of things.

Subscription Service
Next, Alliance WebPOS offers subscription service.  With this setup, there is no investment risk associated with server and software license procurement, or hiring IT staffs to administer these.   Everything can be setup under 10 minutes with minimal cost.  And there is no one time setup fee.  Subscription cost around $1 a day so you can just add terminals as your business grows.

Data Integration
This solution fits perfectly for you especially if you are operating  multiple stores in different locations.  It naturally integrates all the data in real time.   Many POS vendors offer good solution as long as it operates in one location.  But across branches, it is often a nightmare and very costly to integrate.

Offline Mode
One cool feature about Alliance WebPOS is the offline mode. In this mode, you do not need to be physically connected to internet all the time to do transaction.    It regularly checks for connection and transmit very small packet of data whenever it is available. Otherwise, all data are stored securely in your local hard drive.  This setup works well in diverse environments such as kiosks, food carts (inside the ship) and those located in remote areas.

WIFI dongles (SmartBro, Tattoo) here in the Philippines are now inexpensive and together with Alliance WebPOS, you can maximize its commercial application.   Normally, you would use this to connect at the beginning of day to get the lastest prices.  And reconnect at the end of day to transmit the transaction to the server.

Hardware Integration
Netbooks are also popular now, so you can substitute these as your terminals.  Alliance WebPOS supports OPOS standard that allows you to connect different peripherals at ease.    It also allows you to integrate and replace hardware seamlessly.  So if one hardware breaks down, just switch it to another.  Everything will be restored in a few minutes and you are good to go again.

Automatic Software Upgrade
Regular feature upgrades are also propagated automatically.   This makes your program brand new all the time.

There are more cool features and I will be blogging them one by one in the near future.  For now, you can try out Alliance WebPOS free for 60 days and see if it fits your need.  (http://www.alliancepos.net)
